Here's What You Missed…

In 2007, the City of Columbia’s visioning document suggested that council adopt a new set of zoning codes “as soon as possible.” It took 10 years. Here’s some of the other news that went down during that decade:
 

2007

The Mizzou Tigers football team is ranked No. 1 in the country for the first time since 1960. Woohoo! Columbia enjoys it while it lasts. (It lasted one week.)
 

2010

Longtime mayor Darwin Hindman steps down. Along with Bob McDavid and Brian Treece, Hindman was one of three mayors to serve during the time the city’s been considering zoning reform.
 

2012

A St. Louis-based developer plans on buying the Niedermeyer Building, a house on 10th street and Columbia’s oldest building, and turning it into a 15-story student housing complex. A private buyer saved the Niedermeyer at the 11th hour, but that didn’t stop several other housing projects from being built downtown.
 

2013                      

Columbia Public Schools opens Battle High School. CPS also built four new elementary schools during the time the city was considering zoning change.
 

2015

Racially charged protests at MU force the resignations of UM System president Tim Wolfe and MU Chancellor R. Bowen Loftin.
 

2016

With 119,108 residents, Columbia officially becomes the fourth largest city in Missouri. Eat our dust, Independence.
