71st annual Fire in the Sky set for July 4

Stephens Lake Park is the site of the 71st annual Fourth of July Fire in the Sky celebration on Tuesday, July 4. A dozen food trucks, free parking, and a free shuttle from all city parking garages are planned.

The celebration gets started at 6:30 p.m. with kids’ activities and crafts, food trucks, and live music at the Stephens Lake Park Ampitheater. Entertainers will include Banastre Tarleton Band, Allie Bruns, and We B Friends.

Fire in the Sky will be capped off with a fireworks display set to begin at 9:15 p.m., launched from the east side of the park. The fireworks will be set to music on BXR 102.3.

In conjunction with Boone Hospital, the city is working to provide free parking access for visitors. Many of the hosital’s parking lots will be available for public use during the event and the Columbia Police Department will provide traffic assistance.

Go COMO transit will provide complimentary shuttle service from all six city parking garages to the Boone Hospital parking lot: Fifth and Walnut, Eighth and Walnut, Eighth and Cherry, Tenth and Cherry, Sixth and Cherry, and Short Street. The free service will run continuously from 5 p.m..-11 p.m., moving eventgoers between the garages and the celebration. ADA and drop-off parking will be available at the beach parking lot at Stephens Lake Park.

Passengers will be able to track the position of the shuttles that evening using the free DoubleMap app. Parking enforcement will be suspended and on-street and in-garage parking will be free of charge on July 4.

As with other large public events at Stephens Lake Park such as Treeline Music Festival and Art in the Park, the City of Columbia will close East Walnut to non-residential traffic that evening. The Columbia Police Department will provide traffic management support during the event, and residents who live on East Walnut will not need a pass to access the street that evening.

Attendees are also encouraged to bicycle to the event. Bike racks will be available for use, cyclists should bring a bike lock.

Attendees are prohibited from bringing personal fireworks and barbecue grills to the family-friendly Fire in the Sky; alcohol is strongly discouraged. Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs and enjoy an evening celebrating with the community.

Fire in the Sky is made possible by sponsor donations from Columbia Insurance Group as presenting sponsor, in addition to Columbia Cosmopolitan Luncheon Club, Columbia Convention and Visitors Bureau, KOMU8, BXR102.3, KFRU1400, Columbia Missourian, Boone Health, and the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA).
