1. Critter Care of Columbia
If your dogs ever need someone to look after them for a few days or even a few hours, consult Kathryn Cowell. Located at 2700 Lakeview Drive, Cowell’s homegrown business offers in-house dog sitting, walking, bathing and yard-scooping services for those in need. Prices for walking are $20 per walk for one to two times a week and $17 per walk for three or more times per week; in-home sitting costs $50 per night for up to two animals; yard scooping is $30 for the first hour with an additional $10 per half hour; and bathing costs $10. 2. The Trove
The full-service salon, owned by Darci Reichardt and Stephanie Isaacs, opened for business on May 19 at 3910 Peachtree Drive, Suite H. Its staff, formerly of Columbia’s Bella Salon, offers hair, nail, waxing and massage services. The Trove is also one of the few Columbia salons to offer permanent makeup services. Reichardt has more than a decade of experience helping people cosmetically enhance their eyebrows, eyes and lips, in addition to helping hide hairlines and birthmarks. 3. Mozingo Music
A satellite store for its Ellisville, Missouri, location, Mozingo sells anything related to the art of making music. The primary locations in the St. Louis area (O’Fallon is another) sell guitars, drums and percussion and have now extended their reach to Columbia. The store also offers accessories, metronomes, sheet music and amps. Open since June 16 at 1729 W. Broadway, the store is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesdays through Fridays and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays.

4. La Tolteca
This Mexican restaurant is back after a nine-year hiatus. In 2005, La Tolteca was located by what is now the Hampton Inn on Clark Lane and then moved to a Jefferson City location, says Manuel Barrera, the restaurant’s manager. Now it has a Columbia location again, which opened on May 15 at 128 E. Nifong Blvd., Suite E. The restaurant offers the same options it used to, including chimichangas, quesadillas and fried ice cream.

5. Suburban Extended Stay Hotel
Previously known as Candlewood Suites Columbia, Suburban Extended Stay Hotel officially switched over to a new name on April 1, says Manager Nadia Ryakhmyatullov. Still located at 3100 Wingate Court, the hotel retains the same amenities: free wireless Internet, free local calls, a pet-friendly environment, accessibility for individuals with disabilities, DVD players, in-room coffee table and desks and non-smoking rooms.

6. Dickey’s Barbecue Pit
Dickey’s Barbecue Pit, the fastest growing restaurant in the country according to Technomic, opened in June at 1412 Forum Boulevard, Suite 130. Wade Bradley and his son Jared, of Jefferson City, brought the fast-casual barbecue franchise to Columbia. “The Dickey’s Barbecue business model was exactly what I was looking for,” Wade said. “Columbia is a vibrant town experiencing a lot of growth right now.” Although a first-time franchise owner, Wade has 37 years of restaurant management experience.
