MU’s Cambio Center celebrates 10 years
The MU Cambio Center is celebrating its 10th anniversary this November. The center conducts research and outreach on Latinos and changing communities in Missouri.
Three events are being held in celebration in November. The first is a panel on the educational and developmental experiences and challenges of Latinos in Missouri and beyond. It is being held Nov. 5 at MU’s Townsend Hall 205 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. The panel will include Cambio Center fellows Emily Crawford, Lisa Dorner, Alejandra Gudiño and Angie Zapata.
The second event is a research seminar about the academic adaption of immigrant newcomers with interrupted schooling and schools’ grade level placement policies. This event will be held Nov. 10 at Memorial Union 5203-AES from noon to 1 p.m.
The seminar is a part of the Truman School of Public Affairs seminar series. Cambio Center fellow Stephanie Potochnick will present. The research that will be presented uses data from the Educational Longitudinal Study to estimate the percentage of foreign-born youth with interrupted schooling, assesses schools’ placement decisions and evaluates these youth’s academic outcomes.
The final event is a panel about the Cambio Center’s first ten years of groundbreaking research. It will be held Nov. 11 in the MU Student Center’s Leadership Auditorium from 3 to 4:30 p.m.
The panel will include Cambio Center fellows Lisa Flores, Eleazar Gonzalez, Stephen Jeanetta and Corinne Valdivia. Refreshments will be provided.
Additionally, the center will display its work in the Ellis Library Colonnade during the month of December.
The Cambio Center has several goals, including providing education and enhancing welfare for all Missouri residents in the context of the current demographic changes. They also want to develop a premier source of knowledge, scholarship and outreach to respond to the local effects of globalization.
