
What: Marshalls is a chain of discount apparel stores owned by The TJX Cos., the parent of T.J. Maxx, a similar retail store with an outlet in Jefferson City. Marshalls advertises discounts of up to 60 percent on designer and name-brand fashions. The company said it buys clothing and accessories from retailers that order more goods than they can sell and from suppliers that overproduce.

Why: “We wanted to be in a thriving retail location,” said Laura McDowell, a spokeswoman for Marshalls. “We look at demographics, proximity to other stores. … This area hit that criteria, so we found it to be a good opportunity.”
