This can’t be your usual school boss.
Not long after Chris Belcher donned a superhero costume to promote a fundraising event, he entered a hamburger competition.
On Thursday, Belcher was announced the winner of the Stadium Grill Great American Burger Champion.
The Belcher Burger was voted tops by fans during an online competition that lasted more than eight weeks. His entry was not exactly a diet version; it is made with two hamburger patties with blue cheese in the middle topped with caramelized Vidalia onions and drizzled with balsamic vinegar.
Belcher was one of five celebrity “chefs.” The others were Columbia Mayor Bob McDavid; Tom Bradley of 93.9 The Eagle; MU assistant basketball coach T.J. Cleveland; Mike Kelly, voice of the MU Tigers; and MEM President and CEO Roger Wilson.
Each celebrity created a burger recipe for the competition, and each chose a nonprofit organization to compete for in the challenge. Each burger creation was listed on Stadium Grill’s website and featured at the restaurant during the competition, which began in early August.
Although Belcher enjoys his new status, the real winner is the Assistance League of Mid-Missouri (www.almm.org) The Belcher Burger will be placed on the Stadium Grill menu for 12 months, and 50 cents from the sale of each burger will go to the Assistance League, Belcher’s chosen charity.
Last month at a press conference held in front of the Boone County Government Building, Columbia Public Schools Superintendant Chris Belcher led costume-clad community members in announcing "Be a Superhero for Columbia Public School," an effort to break the Guinness World Record for "most people dressed as superheroes." The Oct. 30 event will raise money for the Columbia Public Schools.
