Editor’s choice: Coffee in CoMo

If you’ve ever seen the movie “The Devil Wears Prada,” (which just so happens to be one of my favorites), then you know that the amazing Meryl Streep plays an absolutely unbearable character that we would all loathe working for. Well, let’s just say she doesn’t make a magazine editors look evil.

SPOILER ALERT: She turns out to be alright. She and her assistant (played by the lovely Anne Hathaway) end up being just fine by the end of the movie.

Please note, I have never made an intern go grab me a cup of coffee and that’s because of a few reasons:

  1. I would never make an intern do that. It’s not going to help them become great journalists.
  2. I’m picky about my coffee. Just a smidgen of cream with a hint of sugar.
  3. I like visiting the coffee houses and making friends with strangers (aka the baristas).
  4. It’s nice to step away from my computer for a few minutes. Or I just end up taking it with me…

The thing is, I just recently started drinking the glorious stuff! (crazy, right?) I didn’t even drink it in college and that’s when most people learn to survive on it.

I really wasn’t turned on to coffee until I had my first job, lived alone and decided it was about time I learned to like it because whether I liked it or not, 90 percent of the interviews I did for work took place at, you guess it, Starbucks.

There’s something about coffee: the way it brings people together and sort of starts conversations. Sometimes, the most difficult conversations we have to have take place with a cup of coffee. It’s comforting to hold something warm in your hands on a cold day, or even a hot summer morning. Sometimes, business deals are even made over a cup of joe. When my very best friend used to come home over the holiday season from California, we would meet for a cup of coffee and then go drive around Columbia, do some shopping and catch up on life. But it started with coffee.

Some of my favorite coffee houses in Columbia include Coffee Zone, Dunn Bros., Panera (the Hazelnut coffee is AMAZING), Shortwave (in Ally A) and Kaldis. I’m not a “go the same place every morning” kind of girl. I really do mix it up. But next time you’re in the mood for a wonderful cup of coffee, try a new place.

Editing The Summer Issue before our May press date. With coffee, of course.

When we have a big fashion shoot for the magazine they typically start early in the morning with hair and makeup at Blanc Studio. Blanc Studio is conveniently located right on Broadway, which means there are lots of places to choose from to get a cup of joe. As soon as the ladies are settled in and get to beautifying, I make a coffee run. I love bringing back exactly what was needed to make such a fun day start off right!

Plus, if you’re an early riser, you can park downtown without traffic OR paying the meter 🙂 Just sayin’.

Cheers.
