Go For Happily Every After
Life is what you make of it, so why not go for happily ever after?
You know when your kids are small, you can only dream of a week without them? Well, my kids are “tweens,” so they fight, never want to help with chores around the house and back talk all of the time. But I still miss them dearly!
This week, my 10 and 12-year-olds are at their aunt’s house. She has spoiled them rotten. They went to the zoo, rode paddle boats, went bowling, got pedicures, swam and went to see the new movie How to Train a Dragon 2. Sounds like a week of excitement to me! And this is what my husband and I did…nothing!
Well, it only feels like nothing. I can’t list all the “things” we have done, but each night the kids were gone, we did have a date night. So whether we went out or stayed home, we dated…not spend a ton of money, go all out, date. But rather, spend time together. We don’t get that important time; the same time we took for granted when we first got married. Whether it was holding hands, sitting on the couch after dinner or going to bed at the same time, we made a continuous effort to enjoy the other person. We did that this week, and I’m proud of us!
The first part to a Happily Ever After is making time for your spouse. This is important, especially in this day and age where we are so rushed. Our spouses are the people we lean on, confide in and, unfortunately, mistreat the most. 🙁 My husband, for instance, picks up the slack (not every time but a lot) when I’m working late or volunteering on the weekends. He is truly my counter partner. I know you’re thinking, “I want that.” Well, you can have it! Put forth the effort; make sure to find a balance in your home. Be sure to thank your counter partner for the little things they do; speak their Love Language, encourage them…it’s all part of helping them to realize how important they are to you.
The second part is loving yourself. Be kind, don’t judge, encourage and build up. These are all part of building relationships with others, and it applies to you as well. We have to be happy with where we are, what we are doing and willing to make a change if we are not. Enjoy your journey. It’s not a race and remember, not everything is going to be perfect, but hopefully, you will have a Happily Ever After.
