I’m so glad you brought…

Every event host has a vision for their event – a sexy cocktail party, a casual BBQ, an elegant black tie dinner, etc. While the venue, food, décor, music and all other aesthetic details are important for the overall success of an event, the event ultimately thrives or dies based on the attendees.
All event hosts have been in a situation where someone brings someone or something to an event that has not been invited. Whether it be additional family members, children, that friend they had been drinking with directly before the event or even their dog, uninvited guests can throw a wrench in your event ranging from not having enough food to completely altering the nature of it. Plus, uninvited guests tend to generate frustration and animosity toward the event host, and the last thing a successful event host wants to do is behave bitterly towards anyone at the event.
Uninvited guests are inevitably going to happen from time to time. The best thing an event planner can do is to know going into the event that things will not be exactly as expected and plan some additional accommodations in regards to food, beverage, etc. Also, keep in mind that if you have a guest who you want at the event and they contact you in advance inquiring about bringing an additional attendee, be flexible. They are asking to allow you to say no if necessary but since they did the polite thing and inquired in advance, make accommodations when feasible.
The rate of uninvited guests can be greatly diminished if you utilize some of these following phrases in your event invite:
• This event is invite-only.
• This is a private, invite-only event.
• Invitation is for addressee only.
• Due to space limitations, invitation is for addressee only.
• Venue does not permit pets.
• Venue cannot accommodate pets.
• Must be 21 or over.
• This is an adult-only event.

The following phrases can be used if you want to keep your event open to more guests:
• Your friends and family are welcome to attend!
• Please pass along this invite to those who might be interested.
• Guests welcome
• This event is kid-friendly.
• Pets welcome
• This is a public event.

Keep in mind, as the host, you may feel that this is your event. Although you are the mastermind and put in the blood and sweat behind it, the event is ultimately for your guests. Be reasonably flexible.
