Nathan S Waddell

U.S. Cellular director of sales, Missouri market
Age: 39
Years here: Four
Originally from: Wytheville, Va.

Job description

I am responsible for all sales, customer service and agent relations activities in the Missouri market. I create and execute market-level strategies that support the organization’s objectives. My staff and I accomplish this by creating and fostering an environment that inspires and motivates people to succeed. My other responsibilities include overseeing the hiring and development of sales staff, handling media inquiries, financial budgeting, developing distribution strategies and helping lead special projects.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in business management from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va., and a master’s degree in management from the University of Phoenix.

Community Involvement

I’m a member of the Columbia Chamber of Commerce, and I also serve on the Public Communications Resource Advisory Commission for the city of Columbia. This committee advises the City Council on the allocation of designated revenue for public communication services and determines the need for public communications services that will enhance the ability of Columbia residents to learn about community issues and communicate with government officials.

Professional Background

I served in various roles prior to starting my sales career at U.S. Cellular in 1999. I have experienced the wireless industry from the viewpoint of a frontline sales associate in Virginia and as an agent account executive in Virginia and North Carolina. I also learned a lot as a field marketing manager for a multi-state territory and area sales manager for company-owned distribution in West Virginia and Maryland.

A Favorite Recent Project

U.S. Cellular just wrapped up its third annual Calling All Communities program. Many local communities rallied together to vote for their schools to help them win a share of $1 million. Last year we had a $100,000 winner in the Jefferson City area.

Biggest Career Obstacle I’ve Overcome and How

By U.S. Cellular creating new career opportunities, I faced the difficult choice of pursuing new roles and relocating my family on a few occasions. Familiarizing ourselves with a new community can be challenging. Getting involved in the Columbia community has made the transition easier, and we are very comfortable and hope to be here for a long time.

What I do for Fun

I love to spend time with my family. We like watching football and cheer for the Pittsburgh Steelers and, of course, MU.

Family

I am fortunate to have Maria, my beautiful wife, and two wonderful children. Our little girl, Addisson, is 4 years old, and our little boy, Porter, is 5 months old. We also have two rescue dogs: a black lab named Motley and a border collie named Chica.

Most People Don’t Know That I…

Learned to snowboard in the Austrian Alps while I was stationed in Germany.

Accomplishment I’m Most Proud of

First and foremost, I am blessed with a loving and supportive family. On a professional note, I am very proud of serving our great country for more than 10 years in the United States Army Reserve.
