Sarah Smith Seris

Outcomes/Information Technology Manager, Phoenix Programs, Inc. – Age: 30

Sarah Smith Seris moved to Columbia in 1996 to earn a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Missouri. Upon graduating she became the university’s recreation services assistant facilities manager and served as an instructor and office manager for the Cedar Creek Therapeutic Riding Center until 2004.
During the summer of 2004, Seris worked as a special projects coordinator intern for the City of Columbia’s City Manager’s Office, after receiving her master’s degree in public administration with an emphasis on public policy from MU’s Harry S Truman School of Public Affairs. In October 2004 she began working for Phoenix Programs, Inc. as outcomes coordinator and network administrator. She was promoted to outcomes and information technology manager in December 2006.
Sarah married Chris Seris, the aquatics manager for MU Recreation Services, in July 2004. Her hobbies include swimming, running, biking, weightlifting, coaching competitive swimming, teaching horseback riding to people with disabilities, competing in 5K and 10K races, spending time with her family, reading, and promoting health and wellness in the community.
“Columbia could be made a healthier city by aggressively targeting populations who may not have access to health and wellness information, such as people with disabilities, addictions, mental health issues, etc., who need ample opportunities to learn about healthy living,” said Seris. “Providing free health fairs, engaging the non-profit community in client-directed wellness initiatives, and providing plentiful recreation for people with disabilities would help all residents of Columbia be healthier and happier.”
Seris is the chair of the Mayor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Health, which promotes and supports health and wellness initiatives in Columbia. She also serves as the breakfast station coordinator and a committee member for the Annual Bike Walk & Wheel Week event in Columbia, a volunteer therapeutic horseback riding instructor for Cedar Creek Therapeutic Riding Center and an assistant swim coach for Columbia Swim Club.
