In the heart of Missouri’s capital city, a new culinary story has been unfolding — one rooted in hospitality, heritage, and a deeply personal vision. Leading this initiative is Carla Kessell, the driving force behind Matriarcha Coffee and Kitchen, a café and restaurant that is redefining the experience of gathering, eating, and connecting in Jefferson City.
A Foundation Built on Experience
Kessell’s journey to opening Matriarcha is not the typical tale of a restaurateur chasing trends. Instead, it is one shaped by years of hands-on experience and dedication to the food industry. A graduate of Johnson & Wales University, she has operated a mobile crepe business, catered countless events, and spent a decade working as a District Manager for Sysco Food Services.
That experience ultimately led her to Matriarcha. Kessell had long admired the circa-1880s building that now houses the café, and when it became available, she immediately knew it was where she wanted to bring her dream to life. At the time, however, the building was little more than “rubble,” as Kessell described it. Together, she and her partner, Tiff, painstakingly remodeled and restored the space, preserving as much of the original structure as possible.
A Space That Invites You to Stay
Today, the café feels as though it were plucked straight from Italy. Exposed brick walls, soaring ceilings, and an open kitchen create a warm, welcoming atmosphere. More than anything, Matriarcha carries a sense of belonging — as if you are stepping into someone’s home rather than a commercial establishment.
The menu at Matriarcha reinforces its identity. Drawing inspiration from their travels to Italy, especially Puglia, the restaurant offers simplicity, freshness, and Kessell’s culinary passion. But it remains balanced with Midwestern flair, creating a cuisine that is elevated yet approachable.
Everything from the house-made bread, including focaccia, to the breakfast and lunch offerings reflects a commitment to quality and detail. The menu prioritizes ingredients, technique, and consistency — an approach that inspires Kessell’s belief that meals are not meant to be rushed, but experienced.
Hands-On Leadership, Every Day
As you can imagine, Kessell is extremely hands-on. During busy stretches, she can often be found expediting orders, positioning herself just a few feet from where customers place them. She told me she stays close by so she can step in and answer any questions a guest may have that a server cannot. While she would love to spend more time on the floor connecting with guests, her focus right now is on maintaining product quality and consistency.
Matriarcha fills a unique niche in Jefferson City’s growing food scene. While the city already offers a variety of cafés and coffee shops, Matriarcha distinguishes itself by emphasizing experience as much as cuisine. It’s a place to spend time, not just get a cup of coffee.
This distinction is important in a community like Jefferson City, and Kessell’s leadership is central to this dynamic. Her people-first approach also reflects a broader shift in the restaurant industry, where diners increasingly value not just what they eat, but how and where they eat it.
Looking Ahead
Kessell told me that the restaurant community in Jefferson City has welcomed her and supported her since the beginning of her journey. And lucky for us that this is just the beginning of the journey.
Matriarcha currently hosts private dinners in the evenings and will start a monthly Sunday Dinner. The goal is to eventually open to the public for dinner, but they are not quite ready for that.
“The second floor is in rubble and needs to be remodeled,” Kessell shared.
The journey of Matriarcha Coffee and Kitchen and Carla Kessell is one of vision and purpose. By blending international inspiration with local culture, Carla has created something that feels both familiar and traditional. And that experience resonates with a wide range of guests.
