For anyone curious about fishing but unsure where to begin, Missouri River Relief is bringing back its popular catfishing lessons along the banks of the Missouri River for the 2026 season.
The free lessons give Mid-Missouri families, beginners, and outdoor enthusiasts the chance to learn the basics of catfishing from experienced instructors. Participants receive hands-on guidance while spending time near the river, learning practical fishing techniques and building confidence in skills they can continue to use on their own.
The program has already introduced hundreds of people to fishing. After Missouri River Relief launched its Catfishing Gear Library in 2024 — a resource that allows participants to borrow fishing equipment — more than 300 people went fishing with the organization during its first year alone. For many of them, it was their very first time casting a line.
The lessons are designed to make outdoor recreation more accessible while helping people connect with the river and the natural environment that surrounds it.
“The instructor’s knowledge poured out naturally to us,” one participant shared after attending a session. “It made us want to know and understand more. We would have never done this on our own, and now I think we will definitely give it a go with the kit. We appreciate your efforts to make nature accessible to all and sharing the joy that comes from connecting with the outdoors.”
This year’s program also includes a new partnership with Columbia Parks and Recreation, which will assist with promoting the lessons and managing registration for several of the events. The collaboration aims to help bring the program to even more residents across the Columbia community.
Several of the lesson dates fall on school-out days, making them a convenient option for families looking for outdoor activities during breaks from school.
The goal, organizers say, is simple: help people spend time along the river, learn a new skill, and enjoy the experience together.
