Meet Robin Robinson: True/False Film Synapses Programmer

Every year, Columbia welcomes filmmakers and film lovers from all over the world for a weekend of re-imagining reality through film — also known as True/False Film Fest weekend.

The overall goal of the True/False is to forge a supportive, celebratory refuge for filmmakers, as well as amplify the possibilities of creative nonfiction. Behind the extraordinary and transformative weekend is a team of people dedicated to making that goal a reality.

This year’s True/False Film Fest will be held March 3 through March 6. In the months leading up to the festival, we want to share a little behind-the-scenes look at not only what goes into planning the event, but also the people making the magic happen.

Meet Robin Robinson: True/False Film Synapses Programmer

1. Why did you get involved with T/F?

I love to champion challenging, transformative, and thought-provoking nonfiction films. True/False embodies these ideals in all aspects of their programming. It’s a natural fit!

2. What is your favorite and least favorite part of your job?

My favorite part of the job is giving new artists a platform to share their work. My least favorite part is declining submissions. We have limited space in our lineup, and there are a lot of compelling films we’re unable to accept.

3. What is your goal for this year’s festival?

We are excited to be back inside theaters! I hope attendees fall in love with movie-going again and cherish the communal experience.

4. What is something you wish everyone knew or understood about T/F?

While True/False is a film festival, films are only the beginning. The festival team curates a holistic lineup of programs that elicit thought, provoke wonder, and celebrate various artistic forms. Attendees should make sure to check out our art installations, musical events, artist talks, and immersive exhibits.

5. What is something you hope attendees gain from the festival?

A new perspective. I hope our programming helps people see the world in a different way.

6. What is your favorite part, in general, about the festival?

I love meeting the filmmakers, artists, and various creatives and connecting audiences to filmmakers. It’s a joy to learn about the creative process and share art with others.

7. If you had to pick one or two solid reasons why someone should attend, what would they be?

True/False Film Fest is curated specially for its audience and creates unique experiences you can’t find anywhere else. There’s a lot of video content available to people. However, it can be overwhelming to decide what to watch. The True/False programming team streamlines the selection process by bringing captivating and relevant creative nonfiction to the Columbia community. Furthermore, the festival provides opportunities for attendees to meet the filmmakers and network with one another.
