2016’s 20 Under 20: Emily Harl, Rock Bridge High School
Name: Emily Harl, 18, Rock Bridge High School
Post-graduation plans:
After high school, I plan on studying Biology at Truman State. I will also be a member of the cross country and track team.
Favorite class in high school:
My favorite class in high school is AP Psychology, because I think it is fascinating to learn about the basics behind interpersonal behavior, development, learning, and cognition of humans and animals. I also had a fun and engaging teacher, so that allowed me to appreciate the subject even more!
Favorite club or extracurricular in high school:
I have been involved in Rock Bridge cross country and track for four years. Freshman year, I was immersed into a community of inspiring, dedicated, and compassionate teammates and coaches that have made a huge impact on my life ever since. Running has taught me valuable lessons and more than I could have ever imagined about myself, so it has, by far, been my favorite extracurricular in high school.
Proudest accomplishment in high school:
My proudest accomplishments in high school are getting the opportunity to lead the cross country and track team my senior year and creating a successful Relay for Life fundraiser with a few of my close friends to spread awareness and raise money for cancer research.
Best advice I’ve ever received:
My coach for both cross country and track, Coach Blackburn, always explains how the most gratifying experiences usually come as a result of enduring the most painful trials. This advice transcends the running world and has taught me to stay persistent and never give up no matter how daunting the obstacle.
What you do for fun:
In my free time, I enjoy reading, attempting to play the guitar, and anything outdoors, especially hiking, biking, hammocking, surfing, and snowboarding. I also love to travel with my family and spend time with my close group of friends.
