MU Museum of Art and Archaeology reopens
At the end of April, the Museum of Art and Archaeology at MU celebrated their grand reopening.
On Sept. 30th, 2013 the museum closed its location on MU’s main campus in Pickard Hall and began the 18-month long process of moving to Mizzou North, formerly the Ellis Fischel Cancer Center. The move was made due to low-level radiation leftover from Pickard Hall’s previous use as a chemistry building. More than 16,000 pieces of art and artifacts were packed and moved.
“I’m excited to welcome visitors to the new galleries,” said Alex Barker, professor of archaeology in the Department of Anthropology and museum director, according to a press release. “I’ve been surprised at how many works look different in their new surroundings and how many details are visible in familiar works that hadn’t been apparent before.”
It has yet to be determined whether the new location will be a permanent location for the Museum of Art and Archaeology or if the museum will eventually end up back on MU’s campus.
The Museum of Anthropology is also in the process of moving from its original location at Swallow Hall on MU’s campus to Mizzou North, but the opening date for that museum has not yet been announced.
The Museum of Art and Archeology is now open Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Mizzou North is located at 115 Business Loop 70 West.
