Salon de Capello

124 E. Nifong Suite H •(573) 214-2060

“We’re back!” Steve Stephenson exclaimed after recounting the tale of his nomadic hair styling business.
Stephenson opened the original Salon de Capello in 1990 on Cherry Street and moved into a larger space on Chapel Hill Drive in 1999. By 2005, tired of managing other people, he decided to downsize and move to the 1,100-square-foot space on East Nifong. There, he switched from the traditional commission-based business to a co-op in which stylists rent booths and keep all the money they get from clients.
But Stephenson said the strip mall owned by Gregg Woods began to deteriorate after the used-car dealer went bankrupt and the building went into foreclosure.
“It became impossible to do business there,” Stephenson said. When the lease ran out three years ago, he and two of the stylists packed up and started working at Bella Salon.
“It was a good thing, a great time,” Stephenson said of the experience at Bella Salon. “I will always be grateful to them.”
But when he heard that TV anchor Teresa Snow and her husband, Ben Voeller, had purchased the building formerly owned by Woods and renovated the interiors, Stephenson decided to move back into his old space, along with one of the original hair stylists. The cooperative salon opened in March.
