2017’s 20 Under 20: Dane Steinhauer, Battle High School

Age:

18

Parents’ names:

Michelle and Dave Steinhauer.

Post-graduation plans:

University of Missouri.

Dream job:

I want to be a patent attorney.

Favorite class in high school:

In principles of engineering, I’ve learned all the basic engineering disciplines and have done hands-on labs to expand my knowledge.  This class has been highly enjoyable and has deepened my passion for engineering, since I know want to learn the technical skills I need to move forward and be a patent attorney.

Favorite club or extracurricular in high school:

Battle High School Science Club is my favorite club. As a member of the leadership team, I contacted Sinclair School of Nursing at MU and organized an event for nursing students to share their experiences in nursing school and at the hospital. Besides being an enjoyable way to spend time, I learned quite a bit about leadership.

Proudest accomplishment in high school:

Over eight semesters of work I’ve achieved a cumulative GPA of 4.0; therefore, I am very close to graduating valedictorian. This process was hard and tiring, and it took time and dedication. I am so excited to finish and achieve this goal of mine.

Best advice you’ve ever received:

“May the task be great or small; do it well or not at all.”

Biggest lesson learned in high school:

Being active with the Wake Up Campaign, and specifically through participation in a Neighbor to Neighbor form, I have learned that, even though I’m an outspoken person, I can listen to other points of view and respect other individuals even if my own opinion may not be the same as theirs. My ability to listen will help me in situations with many types of people in my future.

Future goals:

I want to be an outstanding student at MU who succeeds in and out of the classroom. Besides making good grades, I also plan to be involved with the Formula Car Racing Team and might even interview for MU Tour Team. I will also proceed to promote golf in the community that I love by working with the Columbia Golf Foundation.

Favorite teacher:

Matt Leuchtmann.

Person I admire and why:

Julie Purcell, my principles of engineering teacher, is the person I admire most because she truly cares about students who put hard work into her class.  Not only does she help me understand the concepts she teaches, but she has a great sense of humor along the way. I want to be as kind and helpful to others as she has been to me!

What you do for fun:

I play golf and enjoy watching sports. Going to the family farm is fun, and I appreciate the time I get to spend with family and friends.
