Boone County aims to educate with Youth Day
Boone County Community Services will host its first Youth Day from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 8 at the Boone County Courthouse Plaza.
By partnering with youth-oriented resources in the community, the day will offer crafts, face painting, a dunk booth and live music. Also, at 11 a.m., presentations will be given on disproportionate minority contacts and juvenile detention alternatives. Grilled hotdogs and non-grilled snow cones will be offered at noon. Boone County has already confirmed more than 25 vendors for the event.
Youth Day is a project of the BCCS’s Juvenile Detention Alternative Initiative, which wants to be transparent about the issues kids are facing and offer solutions to those issues. By offering resources such as after-school activities, mentoring programs, parental support, counseling services and drug prevention programs, BCCS hopes to foster a nurturing environment for kids.
“We’re just trying to make connections where those connections are needed,” said Kelly Wallis, BCCS director.
Also on August 8th, the MU Family Impact Center will be offering a Back to School Health Fair from 9 a.m to 1 p.m. There, kids can receive free haircuts, backpacks and health screenings.
