Crockett

AGE: 36 | YEARS LIVED IN MID-MISSOURI: 36
JOB DESCRIPTION: As a civil engineer, I design roadways, subdivisions and other infrastructure projects. My responsibilities basically include getting our clients’ projects off the ground and working with the governmental agencies, neighbors and other interested parties to ensure a quality project is designed and constructed.
EDUCATION: B.S. in civil engineering from the University of Missouri. Go Mizzou!
COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT: Board of trustees for the Cancer Research Center; member and past co-chair of the Chamber of Commerce Transportation Committee; deacon, Forum Christian Church
PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND: I started working in the family engineering business at a young age, became a staff engineer after graduating college and have been here ever since. Other than my childhood paper route and selling pumpkins and Christmas trees at Fletcher’s Orchard, I’ve never had any other job.
A COLUMBIA BUSINESSPERSON I ADMIRE AND WHY: I’ve worked with many great businesspeople in Columbia who demonstrate integrity and sound business principles. I don’t think it would be fair to name just one. I admire each of them for their different qualities.
WHY I’M PASSIONATE ABOUT MY JOB: I really enjoy seeing a client’s project transform from the conceptual stage all the way through to a thriving development. Whether it is a residential neighborhood, an office complex or a commercial development, I love to see a project that I’ve been a part of functioning as an integral part of our community.
IF I WEREN’T DOING THIS FOR A LIVING, I WOULD…Who knows? Probably combing some beach for loose change.
BIGGEST CAREER OBSTACLE I’VE OVERCOME AND HOW: Being recognized and respected as my own person. Having grown up in the family business, I was always considered the son of either Bill Crockett, the owner, or Donna Crockett, the councilwoman. Now that I am running the company, I have been able to display my own abilities, opinions and thoughts to my clients. This has allowed me to step out from behind my parents and be recognized for what I have to offer.
A FAVORITE RECENT PROJECT: Man, I have enjoyed working on several projects lately. From the Community at Old Hawthorne, to Bellwood and Wyndam Ridge. I especially look forward to Leawood Plaza, which will transform the southwest corner of Broadway and Stadium in the coming months.
WHAT PEOPLE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT THIS PROFESSION: Contrary to my daughter’s belief, it’s civil engineer, not simple engineer.
FAMILY: I have been married to Julie for more than 12 years. We have three great kids: Emery, 8; Carson, 1½; and Boone, 4 months. Yep, that’s right, two boys 15 months apart.
WHAT I DO FOR FUN: Play outside with the kids and take an occasional hunting trip.
FAVORITE PLACE IN COLUMBIA: My backyard playing with the kids or in the parking lot of Mugs Up, the best chili cheese dogs ever.
ACCOMPLISHMENT I’M MOST PROUD OF: Has to be my family. I enjoy every minute of watching my kids grow up. I wish they could stay little forever.
MOST PEOPLE DON’T KNOW THAT: My wife and I started dating when she was a freshman in high school (I was a junior). We have been together ever since.
